Knight Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology. The Newsletter is
published whenever it seems appropriate.
Members are encouraged to contribute articles, letters to the
editor and items for the Calendar.
The Chapter web site is being moved, stay tuned for its new
location.
The main reason for this "mini-newsletter" is to remind our members of the annual meeting to be held at the Historic Knight Foundry in Sutter Creek, CA at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 5, 2002. The following is a proposed agenda:
1:30 - Call to Order, introductions,
agenda review/adjustment
1:35 - Chapter Status
1:45 - Nominations and Elections
2:15 - Knight Foundry tour and discussion, introduction to National Historic
Corridor proposal
3:15 - Chapter discussions: what should be done about a chapter web site, should we pursue IRS 501(c)(3) status, what chapter activities should be pursued, other items from the membership
4:00 - Wrapup, new items from membership
The following members have been nominated for Chapter office:
Anthony Meadow - President
Jay McCauley - Secretary/Treasurer
Noel Kirschenbaum - Director
Nominations will also be accepted at the meeting.
Chapter membership is on an annual basis, so it's time to solicit your membership renewals. Although the past year has been fairly quiet for the Chapter, plans are underway to increase Chapter activities. A renewal form is the last part of this newsletter.
The rising costs of reproduction and postage do impact the Chapter. On the renewal form is an option to receive e-mail instead of hard copy for Chapter communications. We will also be discussing renewing the Chapter web site at the membership meeting. The presence of pictures and drawings in the newsletter make it impractical to e-mail, especially for members with dial-up internet access.
The new bridge at the Carquinez Straits presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to observe the construction of a major suspension bridge. The last such bridge in the US was built over 35 years ago. The current phase of the 1000 day project is quite dramatic, as the main suspension cables are spun between the two anchorages. This new bridge will replace the 75 year old cantilever truss bridge. It is one of four major bridges under construction in the Bay Area.
