Next meeting - October 25, 1997

Our next tour will be of The Iron Man Museum of the Joshua Hendy Iron
Works at the Lockheed Martin (formerly Westinghouse) Marine Division
on October 25 at 10:30am. Founded in San Francisco in 1856, the Joshua
Hendy Iron Works produced mining equipment used all over the world,
from Alaska to Africa. The Iron Works also produced a wide variety of
heavy machinery and ornamental castings. Following the destruction of
Hendy's San Francisco shops in the 1906 earthquake, the company
acquired property in Sunnyvale and rebuilt. The Hendy Iron Works
assumed criticalroles in the war efforts of both World War I and World
War II. Westinghouse purchased the Iron Works in 1947. Westinghouse
Marine Systems was acquired by Northrop Grumman in March, 1996, and
this enterprise was in turn acquired by Lockheed Martin.

The Joshua Hendy Iron Works was proclaimed a National Historical
Mechanical Engineering Monument in 1978. Artifacts and memorabilia
from throughout the history of the Iron Works and the Westinghouse
Marine Division are displayed in the Iron Man Museum.

The museum is located in Building 71 of the Marine Division on Hendy
Avenue in Sunnyvale. The telephone number at the museum is 408 735
2020.

Following our tour of the Iron Man Museum, we will visit the Stamp Mill
Project site in the Martin Murphy Historical Park nearby. The purpose of
the Stamp Mill Project was to restore a five-stamp gold ore crushing mill
