Exploring, Recording and Preserving our Industrial Legacy
Join us and dig up some dirt - Historically and Archeologically

Where others see rust, we see history

The Southern New England Chapter (SNEC) is the Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island local affiliate of a national organization, the Society for Industrial Archeology.

Our society promotes the identification, interpretation, preservation, and modern utilization of historic industrial and engineering sites, structures and equipment.

We're archeologists, historians, engineers and just plain enthusiasts who cherish our nation's industrial legacy and wish to understand and preserve its heritage.

While we have many specific interests -- including but not limited to mills, mining, railroads, machining, bridges, factories, and iron -- we share a common enthusiasm for the artifacts of the industrial revolution and understanding their impact on our society, our culture and our lives.

We are the Southern New England chapter of SIA. Everyone is welcome to join.

The core of SNEC membership is engagement, whether it's by tours, meetings, conferences, field work, or historical research. We dig in the dirt and record the history we find.

Members receive notification of meetings, notification of our tours of industrial sites or other interesting sites in the New England area, and our newsletter that reports on chapter activities and member investigations. We also hold an academic type annual symposium on New England Industrial Archeology.

Do you have an idea for a SNEC tour or activity? Please send your ideas.
