Knight Foundry

The Chapter was established, in part, to take on as a special project the preservation of the historic Knight & Co. foundry and machine shop. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has declared Knight & Co. as one of its eleven most endangered American historic sites. As the last operating water powered foundry and machine shop in the US, Knight & Co. is a unique historical resource. In addition to the physical plant capable of casting and machining large cast iron elements often crucial to the authentic restoration of historic machinery and structures, there are also unique skills possessed by long term employees of the foundry.

The Chapter helped establish the Knight Foundry Corporation. In 2001, the Chapter formally transfered the preservation efforts for the Knight & Co. to the Knight Foundry Corporation. The Knight Foundry Corporation has been successful in raising funds for the preservation of the Foundry and its eventual purchase. For more information, contact the foundry at 209.267.0201 or by mail at P.O. Box 1776, Sutter Creek, CA 95685.
