We will see, closeup,
floating dry-docks, railroad ferry piers, raising
drawbridges, cruise into Islais Creek to see the historic
hand operated
copra crane and antique steam pile drivers (fired up and
operating for us
by members of the Pile Divers Union), sites of the great
General Strike of
1934, the Union Iron Works, probably the oldest ship yard
on the Pacific
Basin and visit the engine room of the steam powered
Liberty Ship
Jeremiah O'Brien. Our tour docents will include, among
others:
Archie Green, one of the pre-eminent American labor
historians and
perhaps the leading authority on the material culture and
traditions of
labor. Archie was a Bay Area shipwright in the 40's and is
the author of
many important works, including "Only A Miner," "Wobblies,
Pile Butts &
Other Heroes," and "Calf's Head and Union Tails."He was also an unsung
hero of the folk music revival of the late 50s.
Ted Miles, Assistant Curator from the San Francisco
Maritime National
Historic Park, worked at four East Coast maritime museums
before being
recruited to San Francisco by Karl Kortum. He will provide
commentary
on the days when San Francisco was the most important
Pacific Coast
seaport and provide insight into the remaining industrial
infrastructure we
will be seeing from the Harbor King.
Maria Brooks, documentary film maker with a special focus
on waterfront
and maritime history, is the producer of the recent PBS
documentary "The
Men Who Sailed the Liberty Ships," "We Are The ILWU," and
the work-in-
progress "The Odyssey of Captain Healy," the story of an
ex-slave who
passed for white as a revenue cutter captain and became the
most
powerful man in the Pacific North West. Maria will be
introducing us to
veteran World War II Merchant Marine sailors on the Liberty
Ship
Jeremiah O'Brien.
Harvey Schwartz is a labor historian and archivist
specializing in West
Coast labor history who has done extensive oral history
work with
members of the ILWU and the Pile Drivers Union. He is the
author of "The
March Inland: Origins of the ILWU Warehouse Division, 1934
- 1938."His
oral history series in the ILWU Dispatch received the prize
for best series
