On January 17th and 18th,
the Samuel Knight Chapter will sponsor a two
day tour of historic gold country industries in the
environs of Sutter Creek
and Jackson, culminating in a Symposium on the Preservation
of Knight &
Co., Historic Water-Powered Iron Foundry and Machine Shop.
Sutter
Creek and Jackson are on Hwy 49, a 40 minute drive east of
Sacramento.

* The Saturday
tour will put Knight Foundry in the context of the gold
mining industry
and tentatively includes the Kennedy and Argonaut
Mines, the
Jackson Tailing Wheels, other local historic industries, the
Amador County
Museum and Grinding Rock State Park, with overnight
accommodations
locally available (or camping for the hardy, weather
permitting, at
Grinding Rock).

* Sunday will
start at 9AM with all morning tours of Knight Foundry
(coffee and
pastries for the early birds), followed at 12:30 by a hefty meal
and afternoon
Symposium until 4 at Bellotti's in Sutter Creek. Speakers
will include
Carl Borgh of Knight Foundry, historian David Weitzman,
Courtney
Damkroger from the National Trust for Historic Preservation,
Kyle Wyatt from
the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and filmmakers
Lora Change and Andy
Fahrenwald. The preservation strategy planning
session will be
facilitated by Alan Langmuir.

Participants are welcome to join in all or any part of this
tour.
Transportation is the responsibility of the participants.
Precise schedule,
maps, participating speakers and tour guides and
information on
accommodations will be provided upon registration.
Breakfast at the
Chatterbox Cafe on Main Street in Sutter Creek is one of
the best
anywhere. The registration fee for the tour is $15 for
Chapter members, $25
for non-members (Join the chapter; save ten bucks!) Please add $8.50 for
Sunday lunch (Specify vegetarian, if you so desire). This
fee does not
include costs of admission at the various sites. The
deadline for
